FIELD GUIDE / 04

Read the pack before the headline.

A practical checklist for comparing pantry products without making assumptions from a photograph or product name alone.

Ingredients and qualifiers

Start with the complete ingredient list. For nut mixes and chocolate, note added sugar, salt, oils and flavouring where they are listed. “Without sugar” and “without added sugar” can communicate different things, so use the actual label wording rather than a shorthand description.

Origin, size and storage

Look for the origin stated on the pack, the net weight, storage directions and the expiry or best-before information. If an item is intended for a particular food use, verify that the pack says so. A catalogue photograph may show a previous design or size.

Availability and delivery

Once the product matches what you need, ask the team to confirm current stock, price, delivery arrangements and payment. Do this before placing an order; those details can change independently of the guide text.
